View numerical weather prediction models including ICON, ECMWF IFS, AIFS, GFS and AI models with temperature, precipitation, wind and cloud cover.
Parameter
BoM official 2-metre air temperature forecast.
Forecast Model
Official Australian Digital Forecast Database from the Bureau of Meteorology. Updated 4 times daily with 7-day forecasts at 6km resolution across Australian Landmass.
Apparent temperature accounting for wind chill and humidity. BoM official ADFD model only.
Wind Speed
10-metre sustained wind speed in km/h. Available on all models.
Wind Gust (ADFD only)
Maximum wind gust speed. BoM official ADFD model only.
Rainfall
Precipitation accumulation for each forecast period (typically 3 hours for NWP models, variable for ADFD).
Rainfall Totals
Running total precipitation from the start of the forecast run — cumulative, not per-period.
Rainfall 50%/25%/10% (ADFD only)
Probabilistic rainfall thresholds from the BoM ADFD ensemble. The 50% figure is the median; 25% and 10% represent higher-end estimates that are less likely but possible.
Chance of Rain / Chance of ≥10mm/25mm/50mm (ADFD only)
Daily probability of rainfall exceeding the given threshold. Based on the BoM ADFD ensemble system.
Cloud Cover
Total cloud cover percentage across all levels. Not available on HGEFS or AIGFS.
Forecast Models
ADFD — BoM Official (6km)
Australian Digital Forecast Database from the Bureau of Meteorology. The official Australian forecast, updated 4 times daily with 7-day forecasts. Includes probabilistic rainfall and apparent temperature that other models don't have. Best for Australian conditions.
ECMWF IFS (9km)
European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Integrated Forecast System. Generally considered the most accurate global model. Updated every 6 hours with 10-day forecasts at 9km resolution.
ICON (13km)
German Weather Service (DWD) global model. Good performance across Australia. Runs every 6 hours with 7.5-day forecasts.
GFS (25km)
NOAA Global Forecast System. Widely-used operational model updated every 6 hours with 10-day forecasts.
ECMWF AIFS (25km)
ECMWF Artificial Intelligence Forecast System. Machine learning model trained on ERA5 reanalysis. Faster to run than IFS with competitive accuracy. Extended range to 15 days.
HGEFS — Ensemble Mean (25km)
NOAA Hybrid GEFS ensemble mean from 62 members. Shows the average of multiple model runs — smoother and more cautious than any single run, useful for identifying likely outcomes. 10-day range. Temperature, wind, and rainfall only.
AIGFS — AI-enhanced (25km)
NOAA AI-enhanced GFS. Uses machine learning to improve upon traditional GFS. Extended range to 16 days. Temperature, wind, and rainfall only.
Forecast Overlays
Pressure
Lines of equal mean sea level pressure (MSLP) drawn at 4 hPa intervals. Isobars help identify high and low pressure systems, fronts, and troughs. Closely spaced isobars indicate strong pressure gradients and therefore stronger winds.
Isotherms
Lines of equal temperature drawn at 5°C intervals. Useful for identifying air mass boundaries, frontal zones, and temperature gradients across the forecast area.
Wind
Animated particles showing wind flow direction and relative speed. Particles move faster where winds are stronger. This visualisation helps identify wind patterns, convergence zones, and circulation features.
Warnings
Current BoM warning areas from the active warnings feed. These are live warning boundaries, not model forecast fields, so they do not change with the forecast timestamp.
The Weather Chaser provides access to the highest quality weather data available for Australia. By registering you can continue to access it, and help us ensure we can continue to provide free access to the latest high quality data.
Thanks for being an active user of The Weather Chaser!
We endeavour to provide easy access to historical weather data, but as you can imagine, we have to manage an imense amount of data. As a regular user of our historical data we request you upgrade to a paid subscription.
These start at only $4 per month and allow us to continue to provide this service to yourself, and the wider community :
