OVERLAY
- Click anywhere on the map, or use the Play / Stop buttons, to start and stop the animation.
- Use the step back / forward buttons to move one frame at a time.
- Drag the position slider to jump to any point in the sequence.
- Use the speed control (tortoise and hare icons) below the slider to slow down or speed up playback.
- Rain Reflectivity: Shows the intensity of precipitation detected by the radar. Higher values (warmer colours) indicate heavier rain.
- Doppler Wind Velocity: Shows the relative speed of precipitation moving towards or away from the radar. Only available on Doppler-capable radars.
- Classification: Categorises radar data into types such as rain, hail, and ground clutter. Only available on selected radars.
- Use the Recent buttons to select how far back to animate, from the last hour up to a full day (or use the dropdown for up to 4 weeks on the rainfall view). For other timeframes, use the Historical date pickers below.
- Click the live update button (↻) to automatically load new frames as they arrive from the Bureau of Meteorology.
- On supported radars, +1h and +2h buttons appear when viewing recent images. These show a nearcast: A short-range rain forecast for the next 1–2 hours. Indicative only, and not suitable for safety or emergency decisions.
- Use the date and time pickers to view any specific period. Times can be set to 5-minute precision.
- Select Radar Local timezone to enter times in the radar's local time zone, or UTC if you prefer.
- Historical data access requires a Pro subscription.
- Radars: BoM radar site markers.
- Labels: Place names and town labels.
- Borders: State and territory boundaries.
- Roads: Major road network.
- Rivers: River and waterway network.
- Terrain: Hillshade and elevation tint to show topography beneath the radar.
- Contours: Elevation contour lines.
- Drag to pan the map, scroll to zoom (pinch on mobile).
- Right-click and drag (Ctrl-drag also works) to rotate and tilt on desktop. On mobile, twist two fingers to rotate, and slide two fingers up or down together to tilt.
- Click the compass button at the top-left of the map to snap the view back to north-up.
This graph shows the average radar reflectivity across the entire radar area over time. Each point on the line represents how intense the rain was across the whole coverage area at that moment.
- Peaks indicate periods when rain was most widespread or heaviest across the region.
- Click any point on the graph to jump the animation straight to that frame, so you can find the most active part of a storm sequence without scrubbing through every frame.
- A flat, low line means little or no activity. A sharp spike means a burst of heavy rain passed through.
This histogram shows the distribution of radar intensity values across the current frame: How much of the radar area has light rain versus moderate or heavy rain right now.
- Bars on the left represent light or drizzly rain (low reflectivity).
- Bars on the right represent heavy rain or hail (high reflectivity).
- A chart dominated by left-side bars means patchy or light activity. Bars toward the right indicate significant rainfall over a large area.
- The histogram updates with each frame as you animate.
- Temp °C: The latest temperature reading from automatic weather stations in the area.
- Interval Rain: Rainfall accumulated across the currently animated time window (the same window shown by the date pickers).
- Rain 9am: Total rainfall since 9am local time.
- Wind: Latest wind direction and speed shown as standard meteorological wind barbs. Stations reporting under 2.5 knots are hidden to reduce clutter.
- Click or tap any observation marker to view a detailed graph for that station.
