Download
The ZIP includes composited and attributed Bureau radar frames, Bureau warning images, the displayed measurements as CSV tables, and a credited GIF and video of the radar sequence.
The public report and download link do not expire automatically. They remain available unless the report is deliberately disabled. The online report is rebuilt from its source records when opened and may change if those records are corrected, so keep the downloaded ZIP as the fixed copy used for your records.
Radar frames
Each picture is the frame the Bureau produced for that scan. The cross marks the selected point. Blue square markers show the weather stations listed below, and purple round markers show the rain gauges used when they are within the radar image. Hover, focus or select a marker for details. Use the zoom buttons or mouse wheel to zoom, then drag the image to pan. The player assigns both images to the completed five-minute scan time shown above them. Their exact BoM image times remain below the controls because the two products are separate images and may differ slightly.
Where the radar beam was over the point
| Radar | Range | Bearing | Lowest tilt | Beam centre | Sampled depth | Bottom to top |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Newcastle | 19.06 km | 248.0° | 0.5° | 272 m | 333 m | 105 m to 438 m |
Heights are above mean sea level. The selected lowest-tilt volumes could report radial velocities between minus 130.3 and plus 130.3 km/h.
Doppler radial velocity over the point
Newcastle radar was 19.06 km from the selected point. 16 scans were read; 12 returned a radial velocity over the point and 16 returned one within 1000 metres.
A positive value is motion away from the radar; a negative value is motion towards the radar. Each resolved value is tied to the gate over the selected point and that scan time. The dealiased column shows the Bureau's processed velocity for the same gate, where supplied. “No usable return at this gate” means the stored Doppler field marked the gate as no data or below detection, commonly because no precipitation or other particles produced a usable return there. It is a normal sampling outcome, not a radar fault. Each value measures only the motion of the precipitation or other return-producing particles towards or away from the radar. Strong motion across the beam can produce a small radial value. These measurements do not show total wind speed or establish whether winds at ground level were light or strong.
| Strongest resolved radial velocity over the point | 127.9 km/h away from the radar at 2025-01-15 10:20:00 UTC (2025-01-15 21:20:00 AEDT), near the radar's reporting limit |
|---|---|
| Strongest resolved radial velocity within 1000 m | 129.6 km/h away from the radar at 2025-01-15 10:20:00 UTC (2025-01-15 21:20:00 AEDT), near the radar's reporting limit |

Nearby weather station observations
Each series was recorded at the station named, at its own location. No reading has been interpolated to the selected point.
Gust series are shown by default. The sustained wind series remain available from the chart legend.
| Station | Distance | Height | Readings | Highest 10-minute gust | Highest 1-minute gust | Highest 10-minute wind |

The 10-minute archive stores the highest gust for each 10-minute interval. The 1-minute archive stores the highest gust for each minute, so its peak is the finer measure.
Rain gauges
A gauge appears in the chart when it supplied at least one reading covering 15 minutes or less in this event window. Every plotted accumulation keeps its own period, including longer readings from that gauge. Where the Bureau's file supplies a placeholder value with quality code 0 rather than a rainfall amount, this report assumes 0.0 mm for that 15-minute slot so the source's time grid remains visible. We hold no Bureau documentation defining that placeholder. Gauges with only coarser readings remain in the complete table and download.
Show every gauge accumulation
This complete table includes longer accumulation periods. The quality code is the Bureau's own code from the source row. A row where the source supplied a placeholder value instead of an amount carries quality code 0 and is shown as 0.0 mm by assumption. Every other row shows the amount the Bureau supplied with its own quality code. A timestamp absent from the source has no row and is not turned into zero.

Advice issued with it
The State Emergency Service advises that people should: * Move your car under cover or away from trees. * Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony. * Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences. * Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid (131 388), Endeavour Energy (131 003), Essential Energy (132 080) or Evoenergy (131 093) as shown on your power bill. * Trees that have been damaged by fire are likely to be more unstable and more likely to fall. * Keep clear of creeks and storm drains. * Don't walk, ride your bike or drive through flood water. * If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue. * Be aware that run-off from rainfall in fire affected areas may behave differently and be more rapid. It may also contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks. * After bushfires, heavy rain and the loss of foliage can make the ground soft and heavy, leading to a greater chance of landslides. * Unplug computers and appliances. * Avoid using the phone during the storm. * Stay indoors away from windows, and keep children and pets indoors as well. * Stay vigilant and monitor conditions. Note that the landscape may have changed following bushfires. * For emergency help in floods and storms, ring the SES (NSW and ACT) on 132 500. If severe thunderstorms develop in Sydney Newcastle Wollongong or surrounding areas, a more detailed Severe Thunderstorm Warning will be issued to people in this area.

How to read these measurements
The radar measures the air well above the ground
The point is 19.06 kilometres from the radar. At that range the centre of the lowest beam sits about 272 metres above mean sea level. The sampled volume was about 333 metres deep, using the radar's nominal 1-degree beam width. Radar values in this report describe the air in that volume, not conditions at ground level.
Doppler velocity is only the part of the motion along the beam
A Doppler radar measures the motion of the precipitation or other particles producing the return along its beam, reported here as towards or away from the radar. Motion across the beam is not measured, so strong motion across it can produce a small radial value. The radar views this point on a bearing of 248.0 degrees. The resolved value is a radial velocity for the sampled radar gate, not a complete wind speed. This report presents that measurement directly and does not infer the full speed of the air from it. It is also not a measurement of the wind at ground level.
The radar has a maximum velocity it can report
In this configuration the radar can report radial velocities between minus 130.3 and plus 130.3 kilometres per hour (36.2 metres per second, the unit the instrument itself works in). The raw velocity scale wraps at this limit, and unfolding is the processing step used to resolve wrapped values. This report marks values within 10 per cent of their scan's limit so the reader can identify measurements closest to that boundary. The marker identifies proximity to the boundary; it is not an accuracy rating. The resolved value closest to its scan's limit was 129.6 kilometres per hour, 0.5 per cent below that scan's 130.3 kilometres per hour limit. 3 resolved values are marked near the limit in the scan table.
What a velocity over the point was measured from
Each velocity in this section is one radar gate: a sample of everything moving inside a single volume of air, not a reading at a location. At this range one beam is about 333 metres wide using the radar's nominal 1-degree beam width, and each gate spans a further step in range along it. Values listed as nearby come from gates whose centre lies within 1000 metres of the point, which at this range is narrower than the beam itself, so those gates differ from the one over the point mostly in distance from the radar rather than in direction. Where no velocity is listed, the stored field marked that gate as no data or below detection. This is a normal sampling outcome when no precipitation or other particles produce a usable Doppler return there, not a radar fault and not the same as a scan being missing. Missing scans are listed separately.
A station reading describes the station, not the point
Observations in this report were recorded at weather stations and gauges at their own locations. The nearest station used here is 0.09 kilometres away. No value has been interpolated or adjusted to the selected point, so no reading in this report is a measurement at that point.
This report supplies measurements only
Everything in this report is a recorded measurement, or a value read directly from one, with its source named. The report does not interpret those measurements and does not offer an opinion about them. An opinion about surface conditions is work for a consulting meteorologist, who can use this data.
Where a source has no record
Each section states whether its source covered the whole window. Where a source covered only part of it, the periods with no record are listed. No record found in a source is not the same as nothing having happened.
