Fire Weather Indices

Fire Behaviour Index (FBI)

The FBI is a numeric value indicating fire danger level. Higher values mean more dangerous conditions. The rating thresholds are: Moderate (12-23), High (24-49), Extreme (50-99), Catastrophic (100+).

Haines Index

Measures atmospheric stability and dryness. High values (5-6) indicate conditions conducive to large fire development and erratic fire behaviour. A flag indicates elevated concern.

Wind Change Danger Index

Indicates the potential danger from wind changes. Higher values mean greater risk from wind shifts that can rapidly change fire direction and intensity.

Mixing Height

The height to which smoke and hot air from fires will rise and mix. Higher mixing heights can lead to more unpredictable fire behaviour.
