Severe Thunderstorm Warning

for DAMAGING WINDS and LARGE HAILSTONES

For people in parts of Simpson, Lasseter, Tanami and Barkly districts.

Issued at 3:15 pm Friday, 9 October 2026.

Severe thunderstorms with damaging winds and large hail developing over the southern NT.

Weather Situation: Instability and warm temperatures ahead of a cold front moving eastwards across the south of the NT will lead to the development of scattered thunderstorms this afternoon and evening. Strong winds in the upper atmosphere will lend support to some of these storms becoming severe.

Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds and large hailstones in the warning area over the next several hours. Locations which may be affected include Alice Springs, Arltunga, Ti Tree, Santa Teresa and Simpson District east of Finke.

The Northern Territory Emergency Service advises that people should:
* secure loose outside objects
* ensure pets and animals are safe
* avoid remaining in the open when storms threaten
* pull over if it is raining heavily and you cannot see, park with your hazard lights on until the rain clears
* avoid driving into water of unknown depth and current

The next warning is due to be issued by 6:15 pm.
