Severe Thunderstorm Warning

for DAMAGING WINDS and LARGE HAILSTONES

For people in parts of Simpson and Barkly districts.

Issued at 6:23 pm Monday, 12 October 2026.

Severe storms with damaging winds and large hail continue about southern parts of the NT.

Weather Situation: A surface trough coincides with a warm and unstable airmass in southern parts of the Territory, which has resulted in the development of severe thunderstorms. Severe storms are moving to the east and are likely to persist throughout the evening.

Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds and large hailstones in the warning area over the next several hours. Locations which may be affected include Jervois, Finke and Simpson District east of Finke.

Severe thunderstorms are no longer occurring in the Lasseter district and the warning for this district is CANCELLED.

96km/h wind gust was recorded at Alice Springs at 3:44pm.

The Northern Territory Emergency Service advises that people should:
* secure loose outside objects
* ensure pets and animals are safe
* avoid remaining in the open when storms threaten
* pull over if it is raining heavily and you cannot see, park with your hazard lights on until the rain clears
* avoid driving into water of unknown depth and current

The next warning is due to be issued by 9:25 pm.
